Lochloy traffic lights out – again!

February 26, 2010 · Filed Under Nairn, Roads · Comment

Traffic lights at Lochloy Road are out again.
Looks like we had a power cut last night, but all the other traffic lights seem to be working fine.
Not sure what the excuse will be this time? Too cold for signals?
UPDATE: As of 1pm they are working again. For the time being.

Spelling goes downhill at Millbank Primary?

February 22, 2010 · Filed Under Education, Nairn · 8 Comments

Getting very concerned about the teaching at Millbank Primary School.
Normally, I’d consider it a very well regarded and successful school, but this year the teaching staff seem to have lost the plot in some areas.
The P7 pupils are being given stupidly easy spelling assignments, and even though many parents raised concerns at the last parent’s [...]

Highlands: elitist about Gaelic?

February 22, 2010 · Filed Under Education, Politics · 6 Comments

It’s over a month ago that concerns were raised within the Highland Council about the amount of money being spent on Gaelic.
A big issue seems to be how the Highland Council and Scottish government co-ordinate – according to last years budget report, of the £600+ million spending, £500 million of that was provided by the [...]

Nairn craft skills under spotlight

February 13, 2010 · Filed Under Arts, Nairn · Comment

Melanie Muir is featured in Craft & Design magazine, and is highlighted as one of only 5 people from the Highlands area forwarded for an award from Hi Arts.
It’s always nice to see a positive story Nairn, not least when they reveal the richness of skills and expressions within the town, that could be easily [...]

Alchemy submits plans for new data centre

February 13, 2010 · Filed Under Business, Inverness, Nairn · Comment

Alchemy have formally submitted plans for a new data centre by the harbour in Inverness.
If this plan actually goes ahead, the benefits to small IT business should not be under-estimated – there is a huge cottage industry in reselling space in data centres, either through the direct co-location of servers, or even the reselling of [...]

Nairn Golf Club takes over Sandown

February 13, 2010 · Filed Under Development, Nairn · Comment

That’s according to Google Maps, which now has Nairn Golf Club taking up the Sandown lands.
Still no high resolution satellite view of the town yet – though we’re the only part of the area not yet covered, with Ardersier, Forres, and south Nairnshire all covered.
Perhaps when the satellite image is updated to hi-res, we can [...]

Black Isle vs Tulloch Homes

February 11, 2010 · Filed Under Development · 2 Comments

Two contrasting stories about property development on the BBC website over this week.
The first, Fortrose fights a Tulloch Homes development by the town, arguing that it gives no consideration to the character of the village (a seemingly similar sentiment was raised about Sandown here).
Meanwhile, the village of Gearranan on the Isle of Lewis is seeking [...]

Newsbleat – back to life

February 9, 2010 · Filed Under Internet · Comment

Well, we were left hanging for months as Newsbleat stopped blogging, but good to see it back in action after a winter hiatus.
Observant, cutting, dry, and light, it’s a good to see it returning to the local blogosphere.
News Bleat
(Now if we can only get it to move over to a platform with easy [...]

Windfarms to bring Ardersier back to life?

February 5, 2010 · Filed Under Development · Comment

A report on the BBC website states that Scottish Enterprise has identified Ardersier as a site for re-investment for the building of wind farms.
The days when the area was enriched through serving the oil industry frequently comes up in comments and appears fondly remembered, so perhaps this is positive news in general.
The only trouble being, [...]
