Yet another Anglophone diatribe but this time from Wiltfordshire or thereabouts, purporting not to be anti-Gaelic while propagandising against the cultural rights of Gaelic speakers. The levels of funding are far from absurd. The government sees fit to recognise financially the wishes of both Gaelic and non-Gaelic speakers in Scotland to support the language in both the public and private arena with funding which is actually quite minimal in comparison to certain other cultural concerns.
Aidh, sin agad e a bhalaich. Chuannaic mi am bhideo ud o chionn fhada. ‘S ann mar sin a tha Daibhidh coir, amadan a’ cumail a-mach gur e inntellectual a th’ann. Cha do chuala mi facal mu a dheidhinn gus an nochd am bhideo ud. ‘s ann mar sin a tha a leithid a’ lorg beagan sannsachad dhaibh fhein. Taigh a’ bhidse air.
Failte! And indeed, quite a sharp comment I would not necessarily agree with – putting the death of languages down to “natural selection” and no big loss is a shirk to lost knowledge. There’s a place for Scots Gaelic, and I think there’s room for an interesting debate on it – hence the inclusion of the piece. However, it is a very cynical and detached viewpoint. Btw, have start picking up some spoken Gaelic, and hopefully will be able to read some soon as well.
