Danny Alexander – Scottish Secretary?

According to media reports this morning, Danny Alexander is set to become Scottish Secretary under the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.

Certainly it will be interesting to see if Danny’s new appointment – if confirmed – helps raise the profile for the area, and gives it further attention.

He’s certainly carrying a decent majority of 9,000 with 40% of the vote.

I know a lot of people are sceptical of the current Conservative-Liberal Democrat joining of forces, but I’m happy to see both parties try to make it work.

On the one hand, we do need a stable government, and that means one with a majority – a Labout-Lib Dem alliance was never going to deliver that, and would have been very backwards-looking for the Lib’s to join forces with a party clearly defeated and in decline.

Additionally, the Lib Dem’s may be able to temper some of the excesses of the Tories – David Cameron is the only party leader who said that the economy needs corrective action taking now, and I fully agree. However, Cameron also said he wants fox hunting back – an idiotic stance I doubt the Lib Dem’s will be up for.

Either way, it’s certainly interesting times, and I’m sure we’ll see strains further along in the day between the new partners – but whatever happens, it’s good to see Danny Alexander taking a more important role in government, especially if this means the wider UK has to pay more attention to the heart of the Highlands.
