Milton of Leys – a warning for Sandown?

One of the more curious points that was raised during the recent Sandown inquiry is that retail development appeared to be suggested as an option but not fixed.

In other words, even though they were shown in the plans that were initially rejected, it could be possible that instead of retail units, Deveron would simply push on with residential units instead.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood the situation, but if not, there’s certainly plenty to be concerned about if recent developments at Milton of Leys are considered.

Liz Gilchrist covers much of the argument going on, which essentially seems to boil down to Tulloch trying to cover an area with residential flats, even through the land was set aside and approved for amenity use.

You can read more on the debate here.

This is especially worth considering in the case of Sandown, if planned amenities are scrapped for new flats instead.

Well done Brian T – this is a timely and important warning.

The cynicism of Tulloch’s ploy on Milton of Leys is breathtaking. They should be ashamed of such a shabby attempt to exploit genuine public sympathy for the Homes for Heroes campaign. It is outrageous that they should try to use this as justification for building houses on land which is specifically designated for amenities. The local residents are right to protest.

Deveron’s track record of inflexibility and equivocation over exactly what they proposed to build on Sandown, and their determination to exceed, or ignore, the constraints of existing development plans, suggest that they are more than likely to try similar tricks to Tulloch.

Just proves that we have to watch all developers like hawks: it seems pretty obvious that the Highland Council isn’t monitoring their compliance with planning criteria very closely.

Highlands Council, routinely state they will continue to work with developers – communities are ignored.

Planning Applications now seem to always use the word “indicative”, thereby allowing the developer to make a separate following application which will be “nodded through” by the planning officers under Delegated Powers.Such applications do not have to be placed before committee.
Community Councils across the region will confirm that true community consultation never takes place!
