Skies clearing after Winter return

The past few days have seen the Winter snows bring disruption across much of Scotland again – though the weather in Nairn moved between rain, sleet, snow and hail, without any of it settling.

Not so for many other parts of Scotland:

Heavy snow creates travel chaos across Scotland

Heavy snow and strong winds have caused major travel disruption across large parts of Scotland.

Several schoolchildren have been injured in a coach crash on the A73 at Wiston, South Lanarkshire.

Numerous roads have been closed including the A1 at Haddington and the A9 at Drumochter in the Highlands and Blair Atholl, Perthshire.

About 19,000 homes have been left without power, including 8,000 in the Dumfries and Galloway area.

The north east and the south west are also affected.

The Glasgow to Inverness train also apparently ran into problems at the Slochd summit, having to spend 7 hours stuck there – after the train sent to recover them also got stuck!

The A96 east of Fochabers was apparently badly hit by snow and jack-knifed lorries, and the Spey flooded south of Elgin at Garmouth, even before high tide.

While Nairn seems to have been let off by its milder climate, the Gurn reports that the Sand Dunes across the West Beach have suffered heavy erosion from a double whammy of frost and storms:

Another Stormy day in Nairn

Even though the skies are clear enough to see the distant mountains over the Black Isle, there are still dark clouds to the east threatening further downfalls.

JT also reports that the high spring tides have started to flow over the river path, and that the town’s resident swans are in danger of their nest being washed away:

I heard yesterday that Nairn Swimming Pool is threatened with closure. This would be a disaster for the town.
