How many empty buildings does the HC have?

I’ve spoken to the HC previously about the availability of office space in Nairn, and it was stated then that as health workers are moved to the new extended hospital complex, office space was being vacated in the West End of Nairn.

Today I happened across Iain Fairweather in the high street after viewing a flat for sale – unfortunately unsuitable – when he pointed out one of the buildings next to it was leased to the HC but completely empty.

At a time when the Highland Council is forcing budget cuts, would it not make sense to raise income from empty properties by leasing or subleasing them to the private sector, rather than leave them empty but still costing money?

In the meantime, I’ve emailed the HC property lettings dept to try and find out more on what is standing empty, and to find out if any of this can be made available to lease to local businesses.

Well, I’ve heard back from the HC.

It was mentioned that the health staff at Corsee House on Victoria Street will be moving out around July 2010, with the premises being redeveloped/sold.

Also, there is about 16 months left on the Barron House lease, and that the building is apparently still being used by some HC staff.

Will be interesting to see what happens to both properties, and if this means more office space being freed up for local employment.

In the meantime, still no conclusion as to the fate of the Co-op owned derelict buildings.
