Councillors delay Sainsburys – incompetence?

The Highland Council is reportedly delaying the development of the new Sainsburys, first through not serving legal documents on time, and then trying to decide how to use the £250k regeneration money that comes with the successful application.

If the Highland Council were a private company, those responsible for the delay would likely face warnings or disciplinaries for not being professional in their activities.

Instead, the council – as with most public bodies – does not seem to hold its staff or its management processes to account, and instead rewards them with the only safe pensions around at the moment.

If the decision on how to spend the money is such an issue, why not bank it in a community account until real plans can be laid for intelligent spending?

After all, they’ve already cocked up Nairn’s chance to modernise through a pointless “partial pedestrianisation” of the High Street, when instead we should have seen full pedestrianisation.

In the meantime, the planned opening of Sainsburys has been put back three months in order to allow the council to figure out how to operate itself.
