Big Freeze continues

The big freeze continues, and the met office are warning that it could last another two weeks.
Meanwhile, travel disruption continues, with all important road, rail, and air links across the Highlands subject to continued problems.
At a time when councils are facing budget cuts, it seems most Scottish authorities will be forced to over-spend on gritting. A number of councils are also complaining of low supplies, and the Scottish Government has gone into damage-limitation mode claiming there is plenty of salt.
It’s not just the UK that is suffering, though – apparently cold artic air has been forced down across much of Northern Europe, and as well as severe snowstorms across the US last week, this week sees China and India suffering record cold temperatures as well – as shown in the image above (and more details here).
I recall we’re supposed to be in an El Nino phase, so it’ll be interesting to read further on whether the winter conditions can be blamed on that, and whether this means extreme weather continuing into the summer.
One thing is for certain – the Big Freeze of 2009/2010 is likely to be remembered for a long time. While the snow and ice may be outstaying its welcome, it may the case of enjoying the experience while we have it – as no doubt we’ll be back to the usual sleet and rain by this time next year.
ADDED: Here’s a nice pic from NASA, posted to the BBC website today, showing just how frozen Britain is:

Various reports in the media are putting the conditions as the worst for 30-50 years.
