New Inverness to Zurich flights

HIAL and HIE are reported to have set up one-weekly charter flights to Zurich to run for three years:
New flights route between Inverness and Zurich

Holiday company Falcontravel/MTCH-AG will run the service once a week from May to September.

HIAL said a 100-seater aircraft would make the flights on Saturdays with a capacity of bringing up to 2,000 visitors a year to the area.

It’s great to see more connections – but I can’t help wondering why Switzerland.

The Scottish Government is reported to praise the potential influx of Swiss tourists – but is Switzerland really a major source of tourists, or potential tourists?

Why not flights to the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, or any other European country where we have a known influx of tourists – and also offer real business connection opportunities?

Interestingly, Falcon Tours already offer holidays from the UK to Switzerland – so isn’t this flight connection actually going to be all about getting people from Scotland to visit Switzerland? In which case, does that therefore mean Falcon have managed to get HIE and HIAL to underwrite their own European holiday travel for them??

Perhaps we should lobby HIAL and HIE to create weekly flights to more popular holiday destinations Highlanders may want to escape to – ones with sun, beaches, and drinks by the pool. :)

I presume by tourists they really mean ‘expats’.

I’m thrilled about this. It means I can fly more easily to see my grandchildren in South Germany without the hassle of Gatwick. Inverness is my nearest airport. Zurich is theirs.
And what about the business community? When I fly to Zurich the plane is usually full of suits not tourists.
