Dark Skies for Nairn?

Being a smoker, I’m constantly outside in order to enjoy my dirty habit – and as the winter nights have drawn on, I am always dazzled by the display of stars.

Despite the nearby lighting, the skies are incredibly clear. When I had to drive to Inverness and back on Saturday night I was left sincerely appreciating the stellar spectacle we have up here – the stars are so clear.

So it was interesting to read a story on the BBC website about a Dark Sky award for Galloway Forest Park, which apparently makes it a first for the UK.

I know we have an active astronomy club in the Highlands, and certainly Nairnshire may be able to offer one or more locations to apply for a Dark Sky award – something perhaps the Visit Nairn Tourism association might want to chase up, especially if it means bringing in tourists during off season?
