Danny Alexander challenges Scotrail fares

Danny Alexander is reported by the Inverness Courier to be challenging Scotrail over existing fares – and makes for interesting reading:

Demand for action over ‘absurd’ rail fare structure

Advance single tickets are only available ahead of the day of travel and are priced at £7.50 for a journey from Inverness to Aberdeen. The same ticket from Nairn to Aberdeen costs £12.50.

A similar anomaly makes it cheaper for people to travel from Aviemore to Edinburgh or Glasgow — an advance ticket costs just £10 — than from Kingussie or Newtonmore, where the charge is £17.50.

Quite odd, and well worth questions being asked.

Yet more proof that ScotRail is a joke.

I occasionally work in Inverness, only 2 hours away by rail from Perth. Yet the first train to Inverness arrives at 10.30! Most people start work at 09.00. There is an earlier train that stops at Perth at 05.44 but becasue it’s the sleeper, passengers are not allowed on the train, only off it. ScotRail claims there’s not enough demand. Have you seen the queues of traffic running north up the A9 to get to Inverness in the morning? Think of all that lovely CO2 I’m making too!

Talking of sleeper trains, the last two I took to London arrived at 10.30 also (Instead of 07.44). Last time I take it now, it’s expensive and late.
