The Gurn posts a series of interesting pictures covering some of the floods to have gorged the River Nairn, causing flooding, over the centuries:

Many thanks to everyone for sending the pictures in for the Gurn to use, and the Gurn for publishing them.

As the A96 weaves through Nairn and crosses the river, a commemorative plaque sits on display upon the bridge – it mentions having been rebuilt more than once, not least due to flood damage.

It’s therefore nice to see some of this history covered and made real.

Of course, the recent minor flooding helps make it even more real!

However, that seemed primarily due to the local drains being unable to cope with a sudden large volume of rain, rather than a general swelling of the river.

(It’s also worth remembering the near miss we had as the Spring Tides earlier in the year.)

Fishertown currently remains the only built up area of Nairn exposed to a constant danger of flooding – not least being built beside the mouth of a river, with its front across the sea.

Developments at Balblair may yet change this …
