Weekend News
General news from over the weekend:
1. Motorbike accident
A motobike lost control on the corner of the A96 and Lochloy Road, smashing through a part of the fence around Morning Noon and Night. The rider seemed more shaken than hurt, and the smashed fencing has now been removed, with a single traffic cone in its place.
2. CometoNairn.com launched
Iain Fairweather seeks to imitate tripadvisor with a dedicated review site of hotels, events, and other attractions in the region: Come To Nairn.
3. Developers don’t want to talk to community councils
Disturbing events from the A96 speakeasy, with the APT reporting that developers cut out community councillors from afternoon discussions.
It’s too easy to see developers treating “public consultations” nothing more than telling people what is going to happen to them, rather than an actual dialogue. It’s clear public groups across the wider region are increasingly resentful of this.
For example, reading the news around Morayshire at the weekend, there were reports of residential and retail developments in Elgin being blocked by public pressure, and now a proposed Tesco at Buckie finding local resistance.
I can see why developers need to lay clear business models down, but without public feedback being assimilated into such plans, they can too easily fall foul of local opposition.
4. Kylauren flies the flag
Kylauren Homes have erected flags at the entrance to Montgomery Road from Lochloy Road – it seems another wave of property is opening. Now let’s see if we can get that connection between the development and the A96 built sometime to relieve traffic pressures that are building up.
5. Space tourism to take off without Lossiemouth?
Virgin Galactic have started building their first spaceport in New Mexico – however, even though the European base seems a tie-up between Lossiemouth and a location in Sweden, Morayshire Council refused to send a delegate to a conference in London this week which covered space tourism issues.
Perhaps lack of progress on both the A96 and Elgin bypass means councillors are increasingly gloomy that Lossiemouth will not have the transport links required in time for a spaceport?
