Highland Council push on £60 million budget cuts

Ouch – despite the apparent pain of the recent £13 million cutbacks by the Highland Council, apparently it’s now projecting that it will have to make another £60 million in cuts – with school closures a possibility:

Council faces making cuts of £60m

Here’s a thought – a number of major corporations have been making cuts by aggressively cutting wage costs, not through sackings, but through slight wage cuts and volunteers working without pay.

That helps preserves competitiveness at a time when the private sector is suffering.

Has the HC considered doing something similar, and how much could such a move save?

Additionally, how much does the HC spend on proprietary software licences, where open source solutions exist? Have they implemented any migration to open source systems to save on IT costs?

It may take a little more lateral thinking on the part of the HC – because otherwise, if civil servants just rampantly cut services to save costs, what sort of state is that going to leave us all in?
