Dolphin Superpod off Moray

The BBC reports on a dolphin superpod being observed along the Moray Coast, comprised of around 400 short-beaked common dolphins.
The pod doesn’t seem to be heading our way, though, instead apparently migrating towards the Pentland Firth. The dolphins were also found 10 miles off shore, so no easy spotting from land.
The CRRU (Cetacean Research and Rescue Unit) has a study program which regularly covers the sea between Lossiemouth and Fraserburgh, especially to study the behaviours of bottlenose dolphins.
In the meantime, time is becoming increasingly ripe for spotting our own resident dolphin pod in the Moray Firth – I’ve been keeping an eye out in general, but am under the impression that around August is one of the best times to really see them, as they move up and down on the salmon run.
It really is remarkable that we can see dolphins regularly up here – certainly worth seeing, if nothing for the life experience, even when Chanonry Point is a little cold and windy.
In the meantime, a few pics of our dolphins taken last year can be found here – with one of my photos opening this post, above.
