New shop on Nairn High Street
It’s not all bad news on Nairn’s High Street – aside from a new jewellers in the old Pulse shop, there’s also a new shop opening at the top end of the Brae.
The original fruit and vegetable shop, RM Watson, is currently being refitted to set up a shop for young families, with baby clothes, accessories, and other essential items for young families.
Out of town developments are often blamed for the decline in town centres, but let’s remember that town centre rents are often very high, the shop size is limited and thus dampens profitability, hence why a lot fo companies will necessarily warm to larger lower rent units outside a town.
It’s also worth remembering that there is always room in town centres and high streets for specialist shops that can provide a better range and service than the larger generic goods a supermarket will try and offer.
The only thing is that such businesses need support – not least in terms of rents and rates – in order to help establish themselves, especially in a recession.
There are a number of Scottish Government initiatives bouncing around, and if they can be properly synchronised with local needs, there’s no reason to presume a Sainsburys on the edge of the town will be any kind of high street killer.
