Watch the skies!

You’ve probably already noticed the fighter planes roaring over during the current MOD exercises, which have apparently been extended for another week.

Major military exercise extended

Europe’s largest military exercise – Joint Warrior – is to be extended from two to three weeks this October.

Held twice a year in spring and autumn, it sees some of the training of Nato armies and navies held in Scotland and in the sea off its coast.

The first of this year’s two exercise, JW091, is drawing to a close.

It has seen Apache attack helicopters and Chinook helicopter transports fly over Inverness en route to training areas.

For some reason I still get excited seeing the Chinooks fly past. You can hear them coming from what seems a couple of miles away – that low thumping drumming sound growing louder – and then the site of that double-rotor monster approach, flying low level.

The joys of small pleasures, I guess. :)
