May 30, 2009 · Filed Under Inverness

Congrats to Inverness girl Karen Gillan for gaining the role of Doctor Who’s new assistant. Must be a real joy to have got the role, and here’s hoping the new Doctor Who series will continue on the level of excellence already established under Tenant.

Bank Holiday?

May 25, 2009 · Filed Under Politics

Today is apparently a Bank Holiday – the Scottish Government’s website clearly lists 25th May 2009 as a statutory Bank Holiday. So how come Scotland is going to work as normal today?

Always nice to see local blogs around, and just noticed today that there’s one based from Cawdor: Village Green Now if only we could get a few more out there.

Boundary Commission carves up the Highlands

May 22, 2009 · Filed Under Politics

Quite incredible proposals by the boundary commission to slice the Highlands into just 3 pieces – with one poor sod of an SMP expected to cover something in the range of “everything north of the Black Isle” in Scotland (see image above). The article covers the general outrage from the local politicians: Boundary plans ‘utter […]

Nairn Central Beach retains Good Beach Guide Award

May 22, 2009 · Filed Under Nairn, Tourist

The BBC reports that a number of beaches in the UK have failed to make the Good Beach Guide, after a combination of heavy rains and stormy seas resulting in less than “excellent water quality”. However, Nairn Central Beach remains listed as recommended by the MCS Good Beach Guide. Findhorn beach and Hopeman East Beach […]

Tesco offers less for Vegetarians?

May 21, 2009 · Filed Under Food, Inverness

Noticed something disturbing on my recent visit to Tesco – less choice in vegetarian food options. Checking the freezer section, normally there were 3 full columns offering frozen vegetarian food options, from Quorn pieces to burgers to ready-made-meals. But then there was two. I also noticed in the fridge section where other vegetarian foods are […]

Watch the skies!

May 21, 2009 · Filed Under Nairn

You’ve probably already noticed the fighter planes roaring over during the current MOD exercises, which have apparently been extended for another week. Major military exercise extended Europe’s largest military exercise – Joint Warrior – is to be extended from two to three weeks this October. Held twice a year in spring and autumn, it sees […]

Inverness Airport…

May 21, 2009 · Filed Under Transport

I’m always greatly unimpressed how poor the retail facilities are within Inverness Airport once you go through security. Rather than have a shop, it’s a bar – with more varieties of whisky available than soft drinks. And especially no range for children. (Though quite a range of salmon products.) Don’t forget the insane mark-up, either […]

Nairnshire Telegraph panders to developers

May 19, 2009 · Filed Under Development, Nairn

The over-riding message from objections to the Sandown development was that Nairn was not against development – simply that the proposed Deveron development was far too large. The Nairnshire Telegraph does (within the internal coverage) point out that Deveron were repeatedly asked to reduce the number of homes, and repeatedly ignored this request. And yet, […]
