Foul Dog Onwers
Here’s a couple of stunning suggestions for dog owners:
1. If you talk your dog for a walk, and it poops – you clear up after it
2. If you place the poop in a plastic bag, carry it with you to the nearest bin, instead of just chucking the bag on the ground.
Walking around the region over the past few weeks I’ve really noticed the problem of dog fouling.
This is especially marked in areas with grass or trees, where dog owners seem to think that because poo is biodegradable, leaving it along walks is absolutely fine.
This includes both woodland walks, and grass verges.
Um – no it’s not fine. These right of ways are for use for all of the public, and as a parent of young children, this is especially an issue.
Imagine the joy of taking a 4-year old girl off the for path for a wee, along the river walk to Cawdor, only to step back on the path and find goo-ey dog mess in the grass has smeared your daughter’s trousers. It’s disgusting.
Even more amazing is the piles of poo-filled plastic bags you find around car parks, as we found in Culbin Forest the other week. Literally yards from the poop-bin provided.
I come from a dog family – we’ve kept German Shepherds for decades. While I don’t personally have a dog at present, I was brought up to be responsible.
That means when I’ve helped a neighbour by taking their dog out for a walk, and it’s messes right at the start, that means I get to scoop the poop into a plastic bag and walk with it until I find a suitable bin.
That’s what responsible dog owners should be doing.
And if they can’t do that, perhaps we should make more of an effort in enforcing their responsibilities.
After all, there’s a lot of talk at present in Nairn being a tourist destination. While promoting that, we’ll need to see a little more action on the ground to ensure tourists and their families can better enjoy their time outside of amenities.

well so much for the dog warden just seem to sit in a van and we are paying for that. and not sure why some dog onwers pick up the mess and then leave the bags all over the place whats that about. do we need more bins?
Really far out isn’t it? Bag up the pooch turd and then dump it in a prominent place.
Anyway stop the dog ban on the central beach, dog owners are tourists too and dog owners have wallets.
But agree time for the warden to earn the salary, spot on Billy!
I feel ashamed when I see the mess left by some dog owners on the paths and beach. We are trying not only to make this town a better place for visitors but a better place for residents. I too see bags left all over, especially on the paths around Fisherman’s Bothy, why?? Pick it up, and bin it, simple! I have a dog and no it’s not nice and no it’s not fun but hey, you get a dog you deal with the mess they make. Bet these same people moan about vandalism and graffiti!!

I’ve noticed an increase in people leaving bags of poo littered around in the last few months. It seems to happen esp. in Culbin. I cannot understand the reasoning behind this. If they went to the bother of picking it up why not carry it to a bin. Or do they think the bag decays faster than the poo? I have 2 dogs and usually end up carrying poo for them and also then the bags I find around the forest. Maybe I should leave them, as while I’m picking the bags up why should they bother!
Looks like the problem is being recognised and dealt with to some extent:

Perhaps we should extend it from just being a week-long action?
