Exploring the Highlands
Now that the sunny days are returning, it’s time to restart family days out, and continue to explore the Highlands.
The last couple of years we’ve covered a lot of ground, spending days out anywhere between Ullapool to the west, and Banff in the east, and almost reached Wick in the north.
I’ve been making a note of historical sites to visit and re-visit, but the wonder of living here is the surrounding scenery and landscapes – the mountains and hills, forests and woodland, the streams and rivers.
I should compile a number of these into a resource and get out our previous photos, but in the meantime I’m researching where we should look at.
A couple of resources I’m finding helpful:
1. Highland walks
Some nice recommendations with photos on various walks – especially helpful is the added bonus of journey distance and expected times for completion, with some good coverage of walks around Inverness Shire.
2. Ancient history
We’ve already been to Clava Cairns a few times, but I’d like to explore more of the local history. Luckily, a number of the local ancient monoliths are covered here for around Inverness.
I’ll also definitely be returning to Burghead, and especially take another look at the well – I’m especially intrigued to see the use of bull motifs and the well, and interested in seeing how these fit together as part of Pictish ancient beliefs.
