Woollies to close Dec 29th

December 22, 2008 · Filed Under Nairn

According to a PDF available from the BBC, listing closure times for Woolworths stores across the country, the Nairn woollies will be closing Dec 29th. Perhaps time to get ready for some last minute Christmas bargains before the shop front becomes added to the list of derelict Nairn properties.

Nairn Beach appreciated in Winter

December 21, 2008 · Filed Under Nairn

A nice write up today from Scotland Caravan Holidays about enjoying Nairn and the beach beach in Winter: The tide was almost out and the sun was bouncing off the sand of Nairn East beach. There were huge flocks of Herring Gulls as well as a large flock of Knot flying around. They looked fantastic [...]

Woman from Alves left £7 million to animal charities: Grace Smith, from Alves, left a £7m fortune when she died in January at the age of 85. Nearly all of that is going to animal charities, including the Dogs Trust, the PDSA, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and the Scottish SPCA. The retired pathologist is [...]

Central Scotland gets more extreme weather

December 19, 2008 · Filed Under Weather

Central Scotland hit hard by torrential rain – Falkirk completely cut off by flooded roads. One of the amazing facts about the area from Inverness along the Moray Coast is how mild it is. Thunderstorms are extremely rare, little snow settles, and while the locals love to complain about the Scottish cold and rain, it [...]

Millbank and Junior World vandalised

December 19, 2008 · Filed Under Crime, Nairn

Millbank and Junior World were vandalised last Friday night, apparently, but I only just learned about it yesterday (and there was no coverage in this week’s Nairnshire). Basically, one or more complete fuckwits smashed windows at Junior World and Millbank school, and daubed graffiti around – mostly for “NBC” as well as some graphic images [...]

Lochloy Road traffic lights out – again

December 17, 2008 · Filed Under Nairn, Roads

Just a heads up that the traffic lights at Lochloy Road are out again. While this mainly causes problems for traffic moving out of Lochloy Road and Dunbar Avenue areas, it’s worth remembering the problems that occurred last time this issue was “fixed”. For those with short memories, the traffic light sequence was set up [...]

Credit Crisis: What now for Nairn High Street?

December 16, 2008 · Filed Under Development, Nairn

As a tourist destination Nairn seems to be begging for development and pedestrianisation of the High Street, and other developments to focus on Nairn as a place to visit, stay, and spend. While some may object that doing so didn’t do Dingwall any favours, it’s worth asking how many people ever visit Dingwall unless they [...]

No bargains at Woolworths?

December 16, 2008 · Filed Under Nairn

Like a number of other people, when the “up to 50% oiff closing down sale!” posters went up at Woollies, I went to look for bargains. I entered the store, looked at the books, DVDs, CD,s computer games and consoles – all of which were just 10% off. Not quite the bargain I was expecting. [...]

Inverness mourns TLR and trains get a bashing

December 16, 2008 · Filed Under Inverness, Roads, Transport

The SNP’s Strategic Transport Review was supposed to be a declaration of commitment to bring Scotland’s transport infrastructure into the 21st century. Unfortunately, it increasingly looks like a document confused in terms of commitments and priorities. While the aspirations are laudable, the really big question really begs how seriously committed the Scottish Government is to [...]
