Nairn fat blocks sewers

We’ve seen the infamous Nairn main sewer come up previously in the Nairnshire for it’s inability to cope with waste, and it receives a particularly dishonoury mention in a BBC report on cooking fat blocking sewers across Scotland:

Festive fat swells clean-up bill

Cooking fat poured down the drains of homes and businesses over the festive period contributes to a £15m clean-up bill for UK public water companies.

Scottish Water has renewed appeals to the public to collect and then bin cooled oil and fat after systems were clogged in the Loch Ness area.

It is an offence under the Sewerage Scotland Act 1968 to dispose of fat down the sink or drain.

Nairn in the Highlands was identified as one of the big trouble spots.

The spokesman said: “Earlier this year we discovered the main sewer that runs along the east bank of the river from Merryton Bridge was struggling to cope.

“It was causing spillages, flooding the footpath. A camera investigation showed that the pipe’s 450mm diameter had been reduced by half by a build up of fat.

There was also a report in the Nairnshire this week that the incidence of rats appeared to be growing around the area because of such spillages.

It seems that Nairn’s list of development requirements is continually growing, with the question remaining of how these are going to be prioritised for targeting.

Surely if the fat in sewer story is true, then all the rats will be living in the sewers and eating it? In which case should we not be encouraging the rodents for helping to keep the drains open and free from our fat deposits?

I think the issue about the rats issue is that with the sewer blocking from fat deposits, it’s causing leakage and overflow of from the pipe – which attracts rates looking for tidbits. Perhaps any fat coming out is attractive in itself, but I’m sure there are a few other things that go down people’s plugholes that may offer additional culinary delights.

Vision of a rat surfing down the sewer to the beach on top of a mars bar, wearing harris tweed bermuda shorts and sunglasses.
You do get rats by the river, they’ve always been there, are they on the increase?
I wonder if the mink give them the odd doing? I suppose if you’ve never seen a rat down the river before then you might think so. I do remember former water baille Dave Thompson telling me once that the council had put bait down on the pier at one time. Not sure if that still goes on. Does Scottish Water have anyone that lays bait in the sewers on a regular basis?
