Dolphin Watching at Chanonry Point 1

My mum and her husband are visiting this weekend – it’s Bank Holiday in England so it gave them the chance to pop up from Yorkshire to visit.

They mostly spent travelling on Saturday, so Sunday was the only day we’d have fully together before they returned on Monday.

I was thinking of either having a picnic on Nairn’s West Beach, or else drive to Dornoch, but the weather today was cool – Autumn is moving in.

Then my mum – having been dolphin watching in Seattle earlier this year – asked if we could go see the dolphins off Chanonry Point.

We’ve been once and seen them, and it was especially good. They came in really get close to the beach, within around 30 foot – so we could see them really well.

I remembered we’d seen them once the tide had started coming in, which would coincide perfectly with an afternoon out.

I wasn’t sure whether we’d be disappointed or not – I have no idea how predictable the dolphins are – but the pod came in, spread out across the channel, and came in close again – including at least one calf.

I’m still trying to get my head around when the can be seen with greatest certainty, and this is all I have so far:

Season: Between April and September (August is good)
Time: Just before or after low tide (we’ve always been after low tide).

It’s very hard to photograph them, but here are a few from last year while we wait for the new ones to be developed:

(Note – yes, they are as close as they look)
